Packing for a Move: The Basics Explained

When you’re deep in the trenches of getting ready for a move, it’s easy to get lost. You don’t realize how much stuff you have until you start trying to pack it up!

Luckily, moving doesn’t have to be a huge pain in the rear end. If you plan ahead of time and work smart, you’ll find that packing a house isn’t as hard as it sounds. Keep reading for our top packing tips!

    Downsize and Declutter First

Long before you’re ready to pack, take a good look at all of your things. That means everything!

Take your home one room at a time and touch everything. If you haven’t looked at or touched it in a year, it’s time to sell it, donate it, or throw it away.

You want as much of a hassle-free move as you can get. But if you can’t let go of things, you’re just bringing old baggage from one house to the next. Be willing to downsize for the sake of your sanity!

    Organize and Label

When you’re done downsizing, it’s time to start packing.

The best way to pack up your things for a move is by room. That way, when it’s time to unpack, all of your things for each room are already in one convenient place.

Take your home one room at a time and pack like items together.

There are tons of guides for how to pack fragile items out there, but some quick tips are:

    • Use coffee filters between plates instead of newspaper
    • Use socks to protect fragile cups and glassware
    • Use towels for a protective buffer

Consider using a color-coding system to help your movers know which room to put your moving boxes in to make your life that much easier.

Ultimately, if you’re living in your home while you’re trying to pack it, you’re going to have some loose ends to tie up on the day of the move. However, it’s a good idea to try and have as much packed as you can as early as possible.

    Moving Van vs. Moving Container

When your boxes are ready to go, you have to have somewhere to put them. You can go the more traditional route and use a moving van. You’re responsible for packing and driving your moving van back and forth between your locations.

A moving container is like a personal storage container that someone else is responsible for transporting.

Both are great options, make sure you read a thorough comparison between the two before you decide.

Make Packing for a Move Easy

Packing for a move doesn’t have to be a headache. As long as you take your time, downsize as much as possible, and pack your items in a way that makes sense, you’ll be able to get through your move without tearing your hair out. Every move comes with its fair share of obstacles and difficulties, don’t let packing be one of them.
