How Easy Is It to Soften Water?

Even though a certain amount of hard water can be beneficial for your body, too much hard water can cause serious damage to your hair, skin, clothes, and pipes. That’s why so many people try to get specialized equipment that can soften water. Do you reside in a hard water area?

If so, then you may want to consider softening your water since prolonged exposure to it may do you more harm than good. That’s why today, we’ll help you find a solution. But, before we find the solution, let’s discuss what hard water is.

What Is Hard Water, and Why Is It Bad for You?

In layman’s terms, hard water has a high concentration of minerals, specifically calcium and magnesium. Yet, that doesn’t mean that when you drink mineral water, you’re drinking hard water because they contain different minerals. And, as mentioned before, your body needs a certain amount of calcium and magnesium, so drinking some isn’t necessarily bad for you.

The reason why too much hard water is bad for you is that it can begin to clog the pores of your skin which results in more breakouts. Additionally, this will cause your skin to become dry, itchy, and at times irritated. This type of water can also wear out your clothes since the minerals are tough on fabric, resulting in discoloring.

So, how can you deal with hard water? Let’s now see the solution.

Turning Hard Water Into Soft Water

Dealing with hard water isn’t as difficult as you may think, and in reality, you can deal with it using some DIY methods. But, as you can imagine, using certified water softeners is the best way to treat hard water. So let’s first take a look at the DIY methods.

    Soften Water with DIY Methods

One method to soften your hard water is boiling the water you drink or use with baking soda. And for your clothes, you can try adding some washing soda into the load. Baking or washing soda helps break down the mineral deposits in the water, but it doesn’t remove all of it as you can imagine.

    Soften Water With Commercial Products

The most common way to soften your water is using an ion exchange solution. This solution replaces the minerals in the hard water with potassium or sodium, which are a lot less damaging for your body and clothes. Keep in mind that this type of solution requires a brine tank (mineral deposit tank), so you’ll need to have that installed.

But, if you want a long-term solution, you should try resin beads. A water softener resin can last far longer than an ion exchange solution. So, consider resin if you don’t want to worry about changing the brine tank often.
